This course and award is aimed at fully experienced electricians and electrical engineers, who are wishing to demonstrate their knowledge, competency and skills.
Candidates who are seeking to undertake this award are likely to be already involved in electrical design work. Critically, it is expected that candidates will have pre existing knowledge of cable calculations and a good understanding of Part 5 BS 7671, the appendices etc.

Eligibility Criteria
The City & Guilds 2396 course and qualification is aimed at qualified, experienced competent electricians and electrical engineers. The principle aim of this award is for those, who wish to formally demonstrate, with an accredited qualification, their knowledge and abilities in the design, selection and verification of electrical installations, on both single and three-phase and polyphase electrical installations.
NOTE:
Candidate are strongly recommended to hold one of the following qualifications:
Inspection & testing qualifications:
- City & Guilds 2391-50
- City & Guilds 2391-51
- City & Guilds 2391-52
Candidates must hold an up to date 18th edition qualification.
You are expected to have a thorough understanding and prior knowledge of electrical distribution systems, single phase, three phase and polyphase electrical supply characteristics and to have a thorough, fundamental understanding of electrical calculations and formulas.
This award is aimed principally at fully qualified electricians and engineers, who wish to demonstrate their professional knowledge and skills.
This Level 4 qualification is also aimed at those who are involved with designing electrical systems and is would be suitable if you are an experienced electrical engineer.
Unit 401: Assignment
Design, construction, management and initial verification of electrical installations; the assignment covers the skills and knowledge in the unit.
It is set by City & Guilds and is introduced, delivered and marked by the assessor, and will be externally verified by City & Guilds to ensure quality assurance.

Examination – Written
The City & Guilds written examination is composed, set and marked by independent City & Guilds examination markers and is only available on examination dates and times as set by City and Guilds.
The cost of this course is £1040.00 excluding VAT – this includes all inductions costs, enrolment fees, registration fees and examination allocation/administration.
**Please Read**
City and Guilds 2396 is a level 4 qualification. Therefore, we strongly advise candidates to ensure that they have a good level of understanding of cable calculations, to include key elements such as power factor, voltage drop, thermal de rating etc.
Candidates must be conversant with BS 7671:2018+A3:2022, Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing, 9th Edition and the On-Site Guide (BS7671:2018+A2:2022), 8th Edition.
These books are the permitted source materials that candidates will be using as references, whilst undertaking the examination.

Dated Entry Examinations
ALL city and Guilds 2396 courses which include written examination applications must be fully paid for a iminium of 7 weeks prior to the examination date – there are no dispensations allowed with this qualification.
PLEASE NOTE:
This course is delivered with the intention of providing candidates with the necessary skills to interpret scenarios. Pass papers are controlled documents and therefore, will not be used on this course.
