City and Guilds 2396-01 is the replacement qualification for City and Guilds 2391-20. It is essentially at a higher qualification level than 2391-20 at Level 4. The QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework) places City and Guilds 2396 at the equivalence of a technical diploma – examples of which are BTEC Professional Diplomas Certificates and Awards and HNCs.
This qualification is specifically aimed at and designed for the experienced electrical professional; this City and Guilds 2396-01 qualification helps the delegate to achieve and develop up-to-date knowledge and techniques needed to professionally design a complex electrical distribution system, with safety, inspection and testing as the primary considerations.
The course itself will take the delegate through the entire process of designing and verifying an installation and will cover areas such as diversity factors, environmental issues, cable selection, maximum demand and commissioning.
City and Guilds 2396-01 references all the changes that are included in BS 7671:2018, the 18th edition of the IET Wiring Regulations and all of the associated guidance notes.
City and Guilds 2396-01 is fully endorsed by Summit Skills the Sector Skills Council for the building services engineering sector.
In addition, City and Guilds 2396-01 also allows candidates to progress onto the following City & Guilds qualifications:
Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma in Building Services Engineering (4467-04)
ILM Management and Leadership qualifications
City and Guilds 2396-01 is aimed at experienced electrical professionals, electro technical engineers and other experienced individuals that work in electrical contracting field, who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation and testing process.
• General principles of electrical installation design, construction management and verification
• Maximum demand calculations
• BS 7671 requirements relating to electrical installation design
• Design and installation of associated protective systems
• Final documentation
The written examination dates are set by City & Guilds throughout the year and the examinations are ordinary held on a Thursday evenings from 18:30hrs until 21:30hrs (3 Hour written examination)
Dates will be discussed with candidates when courses are booked.

Certificates are sent via email as PDF. If you require a Hard Copy Certificate £5.00 P&P is required.
All City and Guilds 2396-01 written examinations are known as “dated entry” examinations.
