This course; City and Guilds 2391-50: Level 3 Award in Initial Verification, was developed by City & Guilds to replace City & Guilds 2394 starting in 2017, and is intended for those practising electricians who wish to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to carry out Initial verification on single and three-phase electrical installations with formal, accredited certification.
The qualification covers the disciplines of Initial verification, as well as the methodologies of testing as outlined in BS 7671 (within Part 6) and IET Guidance Note 3.
The qualification is endorsed by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as well as being supported and recognised by the competent persons’ scheme providers.
City and Guilds 2391-50 may benefit electricians and electrical engineers, who wish to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to carry out Initial verification on single and three-phase electrical installations with formal, accredited certification.
The associated training sessions will involve discussion of the following formal Learner Outcomes:
Outcome 1: Understand the requirements for Initial verification of electrical installations.
Outcome 2: Understand safety management procedures when undertaking Initial verification.
Outcome 3: Understand the requirements for the initial inspection of an electrical installation.
Outcome 4: Understand the requirements for testing electrical installations at Initial verification.
Outcome 5: Perform inspection and testing of electrical installations.
Reference will be made to related publications; including BS 7671, IET Guidance Note 3, and IET On-site Guide, and it is therefore anticipated that candidates are aware of, and understand the navigation of these publications.
All potential candidates should be aware that there will be an expectation that candidates continue their studies inbetween and outside of the training sessions, to aid in preparation for the examinations and assessments – we therefore strongly recommend that candidates are able to navigate the content of BS 7671. Candidates must successfully complete an online multiple-choice examination, comprising of 40 questions – the examination has a maximum duration of 90 minutes. The questions within this examination are essentially drawn from the qualification learning outcomes.
Candidates will also have to undertake a written examination comprising of 4 short-answer questions and in addition, successfully complete a 2.5 hour practical assignment, comprising of a full initial verification of a three-phase electrical installation, including completion of appropriate documentation.
The multiple-choice exams and the short-answer examination are known as ‘open book;’ candidates will be allowed to refer to *clean copies* of BS 7671, IET On-site Guide and IET Guidance Note 3, however all assessments and examinations are robustly Invigilated and are conducted in accordance with Joint Council of Qualifications (JCQ) regulations and requirements.
This course is subject to vat and is inclusive of all course materials, examination fees and refreshments.

As the course itself deals with the application of knowledge involved with the practice of carrying out initial verification and testing, it is anticipated that candidates who wish to undertake this course should have some electrical experience in preferably prior participation in the process of initial verification and testing of a single and three-phase electrical installation.
